Roles and Responsibilities

     The government of Canada works in partnership with all the provinces and territories to ensure air water and soil quality is safe and regulate chemicals and toxins added into our environment.

Federal Government

Develops guidelines for drinking water aa well as providing scientific and technical expertise to the provincial and territorial governments.

  • conducts health assessments based on the guidelines

  • conducts and collects research information on water contaminants.

Is in charge of regulating drinking water systems, managing source waters, setting quality standards, and placing treatment plants and distribution systems.

Municipalities

​

Distribute water to the public and in charge of safe water treatment.

 

Health Canada works closely with public health professional, the genera public, industries, and other health and environmental groups to ensure that all decisions are comprehensive and effective.
