Land Pollution

Land Pollution can be defined as the degradation or destruction of the earth’s surface or soil. Land Pollution can be caused due to:

​

·       Natural causes

The natural causes of Land Pollution include erosion, Floods, forest fires, heavy metals, storm erosion (such as earthquakes, tornadoes, hurricanes)

​

·       Man made (Anthropogenic) causes.

Man made causes of Land Pollution includes coal mining, nuclear plants, oil refineries, pesticides and agricultural practises, deforestation etc.

​

The effects of land pollution can be as follows:

​

  • Soil pollution

It is an form of land pollution in which the upper layer of soil is polluted by pesticides, running water or chemicals.

​

  • Climatic patterns could be changed

Land pollution can lead to loss of ecosystem which as a result causes change in climatic pattern.

​

  • Impact on Environment

When land pollution is caused as a result of deforestation, it causes imbalance in rain cycle which will result in global warming, green house effect, irregular rainfall, flash floods.

​

  • Human Health can be affected

The chemical and pesticides in land can cause skin cancer, human respiratory problems thus, effecting the human health.

​

  • Impact on Wildlife

Land pollution can cause loss of habitats for the wildlife forcing them to move to other regions or die trying to adjust in the new environment.
